Porquê este catálogo de foto-identificação? - Why this Photo-ID catalogue?

Este blogue e o e-mail que o acompanham pretendem constituir um teste a uma ideia simples: a possibilidade de construção de um catálogo de foto-identificação de cetáceos utilizando fotografias obtidas por amadores.	This blog and the associated e-mail are a test bed for a simple idea: the possibility of building an online cetacean photo-ID catalog from amateur photographs.
São seguramente centenas as fotografias de cetáceos efectuadas por amadores todos os dias nas várias ilhas do arquipélago. Isto constitui um manancial enorme de informação sobre os mais variados aspectos da ecologia e da biologia destes animais, o qual neste momento se perde, diluído pelos computadores individuais. Acreditamos que a maioria das pessoas gostaria de dar alguma utilidade às suas fotografias, e este é o meio que idealizámos para corresponder a esse desejo.	Everyday surely hundreds of cetacean photographs are taken by amateurs around most of the islands of the archipelago. This is a huge source of information on various aspects of the ecology and biology of these animals which is lost because it is diluted among the individual computers of the picture-takers. We believe most people would want to do something usefull with their photographs, and we are hereby trying to develop the means to do just that.
As fotografias submetidas serão integradas numa base de dados a partir da qual será construído o catálogo, o qual por sua vez será livremente disponibilizado na Internet. As imagens mantém os direitos de autor, sendo o seu uso restrito a fins científicos. Ao enviar as fotografias (na qualidade original), é essencial incluir informação sobre a data, a hora e o local onde foram tiradas. Coordenadas GPS são o ideal, mas mesmo uma localização geral é útil. Para mais informação (embora tecnicamente desactualizada) ver Photo-ID Guidelines.	The pictures submitted will be integrated in a database from which a catalog will be built and made freely available on the Internet. The pictures remain the copyright of their authors, their use restricted only to scientific purposes. When submitting the photographs it is essential to add information about the date, time and location (GPS coordinates are excelent, but even a general location is helpfull) in which they were taken. Pictures from Futurismo

We received a large group of photographs taken by colaborators from Futurismo, taken off the south coast of São Miguel this season. We are busy treating them. Some photographs can already be seen in the catalog, and the rest will appear very soon.

A Futurismo enviou-nos um excelente lote de fotos tiradas esta época pelos seus colaboradores e por alguns clientes. Algumas delas já estão no catálogo, as outras serão ali colocadas em breve.

Espaço Talassa Id

Começámos a incorporação das fotos compiladas pelo Espaço Talassa, das Lajes do Pico. São mais de 700 fotografias de cachalotes, graciosamente disponibilizadas pelo pessoal da empresa e por clientes. Cada fotografia vem acompanhada de um conjunto importante de metadados, incluindo a posição geográfica. Um excelente exemplo de serviço ao conhecimento dos cetáceos nos Açores.

We have started incorporating the pictures of Espaço Talassa, in Lajes do Pico. It's more than 700 sperm whale picures, taken by staff and clients and made freely available on the internet. Important metadata, including the geographical position, is appendend to each picture. An excelent service to the knowledge of the Azorean cetaceans.

Pictures from Martin Kurtsson

We received some images of sperm whale flukes from Martin Kurtsson that he took off the south coast of São Miguel on August the 18th, 2010. One of these was able to be used and it was added to the catalogue with the number DBUAC-PMA-10016

We received some images of sperm whale flukes from Arne Kiis that he took off the south coast of São Miguel on June the 18th, 2010. Two of these were usable and were added to the catalogue with the numbers DBUAC-PMA-10011 and DBUAC-PMA-10012

We received some images of sperm whale flukes from Tim Farland that he took off the south coast of São Miguel on June the 17th, 2010. One of these was able to be used and it was added to the catalogue with the number DBUAC-PMA-10010
